尾の黒い模様がミッキーマウスのような形をしていることから「ミッキーマウス」という名前が付きました。体高が高くしっかりとした体形をしていて、卵胎生と呼ばれる稚魚を出産する繁殖形態を持っています。

The black part of the tail resembles a Mickey Mouse head turned sideways, hence the name “Mickey Mouse Platy.” They are tall and solidly built, and are ovoviviparous, a form of reproduction in which they directly give birth to fry.
